Two sources give different information about his parent(s).

He came to Erie County, Pennsylvania, about 1805, subsequently settling in Fairview township. He was of Irish descent. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, and Superior Collector of his township.

He and his wife were the parents of fourteen children, William was the fifth.
