He was a native of Massachusetts, and after the Revolutionary War he enlisted in the army engaged in the Indian War, and having served his term of five months reported at Pittsburgh and was honorably discharged. He then came to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where he led the life of a pioneer, leveling the forest, clearing and cultivating the ground, depending upon the fruit of his own labor for the sustenance of his family and herds. He was the father of eight children, a daughter and seven sons.
