General Notes: Husband - Jacob B. Exley

In 1860 Census, he was recorded in the household of John and Mary Sherry who were married for over 20 years, with no children. Jacob was listed as 8 years old and "adopted". (According to family lore, he was apprenticed, as a young person, to his uncle, Mr. Sherry who was a gunsmith.)
In 1876-1877, Jacob Exley worked in Fairview, Erie County, PA, for Thomas W. Childs. Jacob was attracted Thomas Child's daughter Elizabeth Julia Childs. She dated him occasionally, but she had a crush on another boy and wanted him to take her to a dance. When he didn't ask her to the dance, she was upset. She asked Jacob if he still wanted to marry her. He said yes. (Elizabeth Childs married Jacob Exley on impulse, because she wanted to make another suiter jealous). They were married, she returned to her home and he returned to his home. The next day she went to school. Jacob went to work and told her father. Her father went to the school and told "Libby" she had to leave school, she was a married woman now. He took her home, had new floor length dresses made for her and packed her off to her husband. Elizabeth and Jacob went to Clarion to start their life together. Their relationship was not the most pleasant, as she was a very demanding irritable person. (Story told by granddaughter Hannah Jane (Exley) Ploss 7/2/2000 at Exley Reunion.)
Jacob Exley and his wife Elizabeth Julia (Childs) then made their home and spent their life in the Fairview Township, Erie County, area. Jacob worked over 30 years on the Old Lake Shore and New York Central railroads beginning as a section hand and retired as a foreman in 1922-23 at the age of 70 years. In later years they lived on Water Street in Fairview. Jacob and Elizabeth both went blind in their older years, one from glaucoma and the other from diabetes. They were placed in two different family homes. Jacob lived with their son R. C. Exley, in his home on Pine Street in Fairview and Elizabeth lived with daughter, Lou in her home on Main Street in Fairview. Jacob's health deteriorated and he eventually went to a Warren, PA, Hospital and died there.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Julia "Libby" Childs
