He was born on his father's farm in Washington township, Butler County, PA, and commenced his business life by working the homestead farm on shares, which he continued to do for several years. After his marriage he settled on his another farm, which his wife inherited. He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian church, and politically, he was a Repub­lican.
