He was an officer in the militia, the Mt. Jackson Guards.
At one time he owned and resided on a part of the farm later owned by his grandson, Robert S. Clark, the latter of whom came to live with the grandfather at the time of the death of his young mother, being then a babe of but four months and an only child.
