He was a volunteer from Illinois dur­ing the Civil War, where he was in the hospital service through a part of that conflict and in actual combat the balance of the time. He taught school in Illinois and later in Pennsylvania; however the latter part of his life was spent in farming.

She was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, but at the age of sixteen removed with her family to Illinois, but returned to Pennsylvania with her husband and family in 1879.
