General Notes: Husband - John Clarke

John Clarke is believed to have come from Great Mundon, Hertfordshire, England, in 1632. He first settled at Newtowne (now Cambridge), MA, but removed with Hooker's Company to Hartford, CT, in 1636, where John Clarke's name is on the monument erected to the first settlers of Hartford, in Center Church Cemetery.
He was a soldier in the Pequot War in 1637, and served as a Juror in Hartford in 1641. He removed with his son-in-law, Wm. Pratt. to Saybrook, CT, in 1645 or 1646. In 1647 he was appointed by the General Court, in company with Capt. John Mason, to carry on the building of the fort at Saybrook.
He was one of the nineteen petitioners to Charles H. in 1662, for the Charter secured by Governor Winthrop. This Charter was hidden in the famous Charter Oak, and is now in a fine state of preservation in a glass front safe in the State Capitol at Hartford. John Clarke was one of the most prominent citizens of Saybrook. There seems to have been a division of the church in 1662 or 1663, and he, with a number of others, moved to Norwich, CT, and established a church there. Shortly after this, he removed to Milford, CT, where his brother George was living, and September 24, 1666, he received his dismissal from the church in Norwich, and was admitted to the church In Milford, where he died, leaving a will made in 1673. He was a large land owner.
"On June 4, 1673, Mr. John Clarke and Sergeant Daniel Buckingham were ordained Ruling Elders." (Quoted from Milford Church Records.)
