General Notes: Husband - Esben Turner

With patience and great effort he slowly cleared the timber away from his acres of forest land. By painful, unceasing labor, at length he became possessed of considerable property. He built a saw-mill of the kind used then, with an up and down saw, that brought in custom work, and was a fruitful means of adding to the family purse. With lumber from his own mill, he erected a frame dwelling of commodious proportions on the road between Mercer and Franklin, and the house being favorably located and well suited for such purposes he conducted a hotel, becoming a popular host and increasing his acquaintance considerably through the county. This hotel was run for many years, but the structure was later used as a private dwelling. Mr. Turner lived successively in Centertown and Sandy Lake, finally returning to Jackson Center, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

In addition to farming the place he erected a saw mill on the creek running through his place. Later he replaced the hewed log house by a frame one, near the village in which he kept hotel. He rented his farm and moved to Mill Creek township and rented the Carnahan farm a couple of years. He then returned to his farm and hotel in Jackson Centre for a short time. He then sold the farm and went near Centretown, and purchased the old Calman farm adjoining his brother Samuel's, but in a few years he sold this and removed to Sandy Lake and built a hotel which he managed for several years. He finally rented his hotel and returned to Jackson Centre where he had previously purchased some property.
