He spent his boyhood in Butler, Pennsylvania, and attended the local public schools. He later attended Ohio State University, and after 1913 was identified with the business which his father established. He was a Republican, a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Fellows, Sterling Club, Butler Country Club, Rotary Club, and Board of Commerce.
