General Notes: Husband - Mark Mordecai Cochran

He was born at the Cochran homestead. He was educated in local schools, and in Bethany College, West Virginia, from which he graduated in 1875. He then entered the law office of the Hon. C. E. Boyle, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, as a student-at-law, was admitted to the bar June 5, 1877. In 1883 he was elected district attorney of Fayette County on the Democratic ticket and filled the office for three years. In 1889 he was Democratic candidate for Congressman from that district and made an excellent showing in the election, although he belonged to the minority party of the district. His financial activities, meantime, were far-reaching and important, and he was for many years an outstanding figure in industrial development. In 1880 he joined his brothers, James W. and Lutellas Cochran, and H. S. Darsie in the purchase of a fine field of coking coal in Georges Township, Fayette County, which they sold in 1889. Mr. Cochran was one of the original incorporators and directors of the following corporations: the Washington Coal and Coke Company; the Cochran Coal and Coke Company, both of Fayette County, Pennsylvania; the Cochran Coal and Coke Company of West Virginia; the Washington Run Railroad Company of Pennsylvania; the Dawson Bridge Company; First National Bank of Dawson, Pennsylvania; and the First National Bank of Perryopolis, Pennsylvania. For many years he was an executive of, and president of, these companies.
Beginning in 1881 Mr. Cochran was a member of the board of trustees of Bethany College, his alma mater, playing at all times a leading part in enlarging its equipment and adding to its endowment. He was a director of the Young Men's Christian Association of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and from 1890 was treasurer of the Central Christian Church, of which he was an organizer.
