He was educated in the public schools of Moon township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and very naturally drifted into the occupation of farming. For some years he was also identified with the operation of a saw mill on the homestead farm. In both undertakings he was successful.
He was consistent in his support of the Republican party. He and his wife were members of the Raccoon United Presbyterian Church.
