General Notes: Husband - William Cochran

He may have accompanied his father from Ireland.

He was born in Ireland, and came to the United States as a young man. [HIC 1913, 733]

He cleared a tract of land in Cowanshannock township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and built his log cabin around stumps of trees in order to utilize them as seats after the house was completed. The family lived on that farm and did considerable improving as the years went by, until 1831, when they sold and bought a farm at Glade Run, which later came into possession of their son Samuel. William Cochran cleared the native forest growth from this land and developed a good farm, and it was here that both he and his wife passed away. [HAC 1914, 436]

A short time before his death Mr. Cochran said that he had never had a quarrel with a neighbor in his life. He was often instrumental in allaying strife. As an example, one of his neighbors had a road through another neighbor's land, and the man who owned the land made a clearing on both sides of the road and fenced the clearing thus shutting up the road. The man who used the road claimed that it could not legally be shut. He had no road to get out in that direction. He could not cut a road around the clearing without being considered a trespasser by his neighbor, with whom he had "locked horns," nor he would not have done so if he could have. A law-suit seemed inevitable. Mr. Cochran, then a man 85 years of age, and being on good terms with both of the belligerents, took his ax and cut a road around the clearing, thus making a way for his neighbor to get out, and averting the impending law-suit.
