He was reared at Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and received his education in the select schools and the academy of that place. Leaving school, he was engaged in the mercantile business with his father until 1840, when he went to Rural Village, where he opened a store which he successfully conducted for eight years. He then returned to Kittanning, where he died. He was a democrat and an active business man. He was careful and judicious, and never extended his business beyond his capital, although he possessed the requisite credit to have done so.
