He was educated in the common schools and at Mount Union College, Ohio. He remained at home until his father's death, and then began gardening for himself.
He was a republican, and held nearly all of the township offices.
The family were members of the Presbyterian Church, and he of the F. & A. M.

He enlisted in 1862 in Co. K, 123d P. V. I. (Col. Clark command­ing), assigned to the 5th corps of the Army of the Potomac. He was in the battles of Fred­ericksburg, Antietam, South Mountain and Chancellorsville; was discharged at the end of nine months, returning to the island.
