General Notes: Husband - David Gilmore

In the fall of 1860, David and Johanna Gilmore came to Montgomery Co., IA, from Miami Co., IN, traveling in a covered wagon with their children, the youngest of whom was 3½ years old. They had been preceded by their oldest son, Augustus, and that is what brought them west.
The Gilmore family lived in a log cabin, six and one half miles southwest of Red Oak. In the spring of 1861 David had an accident while fording a stream, got wet, caught penumonia and died soon thereafter. Johanna was left alone on the prairie with her family, three of whom were under 10 years of age.
Johanna Gilmore died 1 Apr 1897. just 17 days short of being 86 years old. She and David, as well as several of their children, are buried in Franklin Grove Cemetery, Essex, Page Co., IA.
