General Notes: Husband - Thomas Cookson

Lancaster, PA - a lawyer

He came from Sunderland, in the county of Durham, England, to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1740. He was appointed justice of the peace and register of the county in 1745, and he was also a surveyor for the Proprietaries. He was one of the constituent members of St. James Episcopal Church, and was an active man in the settlement in nearly all the phases of its life. He resided on Orange Street.
He became a large landholder in Lancaster, York, and Cumberland Counties. Most of this vast property went to a daughter of Mary Lindsey, his only sister.

He had been instructed with Nicholas Scull to lay out the town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in 1751.
