He came with his parents to West Bethlehem township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He received a limited education in the common schools, but became a well-read, intelligent man. He was first a Whig and afterward a Republican; in religious faith he was an earnest member of the Disciple Church at Lone Pine, in which he was an elder for many years.
