General Notes: Husband - Matthew Young

He was born on the family homestead, which was then in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, but later became a part of Lawrence County, and learned the harness-maker's, the shoemaker's, and the tanner's trades. He bought a farm in Slippery Rock township, and at first building a log-cabin, as soon as he was able he erected a fine set of frame buildings and a tannery, and carried on tanning, harness-, saddle-, and shoemaking. He died in his forty-eighth year from an acute attack of cholera morbus.

Although a Whig, he had strong anti-slavery sympathies, and actively identified himself with the Abolitionists, doing valuable service as an agent of the Underground Railroad in rescuing many black slaves from bondage and from the lash. In his religious views he was a Presbyterian.

He learned the trade of tanning and became the owner of a tannery in Wolf Creek township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. In addition he had a farm of seventy-five acres, which he cultivated. He died there at the early age of thirty-seven years. He was a Democrat in political matters, and a member of the Covenanters Church. [GPHBC, 727]

General Notes: Wife - Joanna Coovertt

She passed away in her eighty-second year.

After the death of her husband, she resided on the farm in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, until one year prior to her death at the age of seventy-eight years, when she lived with her daughter Samantha, in Butler County, having never remarried. She was a member of the Covenanters Church. [GPHBC, 727]
