He engaged in various enterprises, being at different times in his life a farmer and a butcher, and also, in partnership with his brothers, building and running a steamboat, plying it for a number of years between West Newton and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was bred in the faith of the Society of Friends, to which, though not taking an active part in the affairs of the organization, he steadily adhered.
