General Notes: Husband - Hugh Scott

With his parents, he crossed the ocean and settled in Donegal, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1730. In 1738, in company with James Ayres, who had married his aunt, Rebecca Scott, he removed to York County, in the Marsh Creek settlement. In 1741 he took up a tract of four hundred acres which he improved and converted into a fertile farm. In 1773 he removed to Westmoreland County, and later to Washington County. He was prominent in the events preceding and during the Revolution. In 1781, when Washington County was created from Westmoreland, he was by special act of assembly named chairman of the commission. [CRFP, 968] But other sources state the family was in America much earlier.

He, with his brother Josiah, came from York County, Pennsylvania, to Washington County in 1772. Hugh settled in Nottingham and Josiah in South Strabane, two miles east of Washington, where he owned a large tract of land.

He married and lived on the Millerstown road, about five miles from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1772 he came to the territory of Washington County with his brother Josiah, and settled on a tract of land later in possession of his grandsons, J. K. and H. C. Scott. Hugh Scott was a blacksmith, and in that year built a blacksmith-shop on Mingo Creek, almost opposite the residence of his grandson. He was one of the commissioners appointed to purchase a site for the county court-house and jail in 1781. A man of great piety and influence, he was one of the signers of the "Religious Agreement" written by James Edgar, and one of the founders and first elders in the Pigeon Creek Presbyterian Church. [HWC 1882, 883]

He lived on Millerstown road, five miles from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was a left-handed blacksmith, and emigrated (as supposed) to Washington County, in 1773 or '74. He was certainly there when Dr. McMillan on the third Sabbath of November, 1776, ordained five elders in Pigeon Creek congregation, of whom Hugh Scott was one. His name is also found in the first grand jury panel of October 2, 1781; also one of the four trustees who purchased ground from David Hoge on the 18th of October, 1781, for public buildings for the county. He was commissioned justice of the peace November 8, 1788. He settled on a tract of land in Nottingham township (where his great-grandsons, James Kerr Scott and Hugh G. Scott, later resided), for which he received a patent dated January 23, 1799, in pursuance of a warrant dated September 22, 1788. [CBRWC, 425]
