He was educated in the public schools and at Grove City Academy. He read medicine with Dr. M. P. Barker, of New Castle, Pennsylvania, and graduated at the Medical University, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1878. The following year he located at Bovard, Butler County, where he practiced his profession.
In politics, he was actively identified with the Democratic party. He was a member of New Hope Presbyterian church, and was connected with the I. O. O. F., and the Jr. O. U. A. M.
