He was educated at the Dayton Union Academy, graduating therefrom in 1870. He read medicine with Dr. James McMullen, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in the spring of 1875. He located at Newville immediately after graduation.

Civil War: he was in Co. F, 55th Pennsylvania volunteers about three years and eleven months.
At the age of fourteen, he entered the army as a drummer of company F, 55th Pa. vols., and served three years and eleven months. During this time he was never sick or disabled.
