General Notes: Husband - James Montgomery Reed

He was born in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, but removed to Lockport, Westmoreland County, where he engaged in the mercantile business.
To him and his wife were born five children, three sons and two daughters, all still living in 1890.
He was a prominent republican and in 1884 was nominated by his party and elected treasurer of Westmoreland County. He served acceptably as a county official, was an upright citizen and a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church at Fairfield.

He was but four years old when death deprived him of his father. His widowed mother was left with a small property and James M. received a common school education. When a young man he was employed as a clerk in a store at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and later served in the office of deputy sheriff of Franklin County. Eventually he removed to Philadelphia, where he associated himself with the wholesale dry goods business under the firm name of Anspach & Reed, showing himself to be well fitted for mercantile life. In 1861 Mr. Reed made a second migration, this time to Lockport, where he established himself in business and became a man of prominence in the community. In connection with his business he was agent for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and the Adams Express Company.
It was in Lockport that Mr. Reed became active in politics. He had originally been a Whig, but early identified himself with the Republicans, and in 1884 was elected county treasurer of Westmoreland County, the first Republican ever chosen to fill that office. The only fraternal order with which Mr. Reed was connected was the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, with which he affiliated when a young man. He was reared in the faith of the United Presbyterian church, but before his marriage became a member of the Presbyterian church. He was elected elder of the Presbyterian church in Fairfield township, being subsequently chosen to fill that office in the First Presbyterian church of Greensburg.
