He was a native of York County, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Princeton college, New Jersey. He graduated during the Revolution, and studied theology at Princeton. He first located as a clergyman at Strasburg, Lancaster County, and preached for the Presbyterian congregation of Strasburg, Leacock and Octoraro. He was an excellent classical scholar. He left five sons and three daughters. He died at the advanced age of between 83 and 84 years, and lies buried at Leacock.
