General Notes: Husband - Joseph Gilliland

He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, near Downingtown.
He was a cooper by trade, and removed from Chester County, to White Deer township (now Union County) in 1796, and in 1805 to Centre County. He kept hotel a while at Spring Mills, but spent most of his life on the farm in George's valley.
James Gilliland, Esq., in a letter states,-
"My father and my mother both having had Scotch-Irish Presbyterian training, adhered to it strictly in the training of their children. The child as soon as it could lisp was taught the Mothers' Catechism, Apostles' Creed, and talked to about God and the Saviour; and, as soon as he could read, was required to commit to memory the Shorter Catechism, and every Sabbath evening a part of the religious exercises was to answer the questions. I do not think that as long as I remained at home a Sabbath ever passed without having this attended to."
He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, and elected elder of the Sinking Creek Church in 1815, and quite prominent in politics, and was elected county commissioner in 1823. [HCC 1883, 406]

He moved from New Jersey to Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1796, and subsequently to Union County. In 1805 he moved to Spring Mills, Centre county, where he kept a hotel. He reared seven sons and two daughters. [HVC 1890, 1055]

He was born at Faggs Manor, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and upon his marriage settled at Lewisburg. In 1805 he moved to Spring Mills, Center County, Pennsylvania, where he kept hotel, and of his seven sons and two daughters the last survivor was Samuel, a resident of Center County.

HVC, 1890 has him as born in New Jersey. HVC, 1919 states he was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

The Gilliland family was founded in America prior to the Revolutionary war, by Scotch-Irish emigrants, and in 1800 Joseph Gilliland took up his residence in Centre County, Pennsylvania, coming from Chester County. He was among the very first settlers of Penn's Valley, where he purchased land of the Potter family, who had obtained a large tract from the government and sold it in small amounts. To the cultivation and improvement of his farm he devoted his attention for the remainder of his life. [CBRCP-CCJC, 908]

He was a native of Ireland, and at an early age crossed the ocean, taking up his residence in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where his wife was born and reared. After their marriage they became pioneers of Centre County, and in Potter township he developed a farm on which he spent his remaining days.

In 1796 he removed from near Downingtown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, to White Deer township, in what is now Union County, and in 1805 moved to Spring Mills, Centre County. In 1814 he moved up to the end of Egg Hill in George's Valley, where his death occurred. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, and was elected an elder of Sinking Creek Church in 1815. He adhered to the Scotch-Irish Presbyterian training, and his son James often remarked that he did not think that as long as he remained at home, a Sabbath ever passed without the Shorter Catechism being repeated by himself and his brothers and sisters.
