He was a native of Northamptonshire, England. [MAC i, 497]

He was born near Yorkshire, England, and came with his father and mother to America. After finishing his education, he went into the salt business, owning and operating a salt works for many years. Being drawn toward agricultural pursuits, he finally leased the salt plant, and bought a farm of 125 acres near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which he successfully conducted for several years. He then leased the farm, and moved to Homestead.

Soon after his first marriage he emigrated to America and settled in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He located opposite what is now the borough of Homestead, where for many years he was engaged in the manufacture of salt. Later he removed to Mifflin township and engaged in farming. He retired from active business in 1878 and spent the remaining days of his life in Homestead, enjoying the fruits of his labors of earlier years. [MAC i, 497]

He married, in England, and soon thereafter emigrated to America with a view of bettering their condition. In Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, he found suitable lands for salt works, and located opposite Homestead, where he successfully operated several years. He then went to Mifflin township, and by industry and frugality became a wealthy farmer. In 1878 he moved into Homestead and there ever after lived a retired life. He at one time owned five valuable farms, four of which were located in Lawrence County and one near Homestead, and these were all occupied by his children. In his religious faith he was a Methodist Episcopal and in political party choice a Republican. For many years he served his church in the capacity of class-leader and steward.
