He was educated in the common schools, at Edinboro State Normal, and at Duff's Commercial College, graduating from the latter insti­tution in 1884. The following year he came to Butler, Pennsylvania, and subsequently embarked in general merchandising, as a member of the firm of Aiken & Campbell. He was a member of Company E, Fif­teenth Regiment, N. G. P., and served with his company in the Homestead riots. Politically, he was a Republican, was a member of the United Presbyterian church, and was connected with the I. O. O. F., K. of P., and the K. O. T. M.
