He learned the carpenter's trade but never followed it, except so far as it was needed in the enlargement and improvement of his farm buildings. His life business was farming. His principal possessions were his farms, stock, and the Chartiers Woolen-Factory, of which he became the owner about 1877.
For many years he was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In 1870 he was elected by the Democratic party commissioner of Washington County.
