General Notes: Husband - Dr. John A. Ritchey, M.D.

Per grave marker, he was born in 1838.

The family is of Scotch-Irish extraction. He had an excellent literary education, having studied at Glade Run Academy in his native County and later at Jefferson College, from which latter institution he received the degree of A. M. in 1874. During the Civil war he enlisted, for three years or during the war, serving with Company K, 155th Pennsylvania Volunteers, and after obtaining his discharge from the army took up the study of medicine with Dr. J. P. Alcorn, then in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. He completed his preparation by three years of study at Jeffer-son Medical College, Philadelphia, where he was graduated in 1871, and immediately en-tered upon independent practice in Oil City, where he made his home permanently. He was associated with all the standard professional organizations, belonging to the Oil City Medical Club, the Venango County Medical Society, Pennsylvania State Medical Society, American Medical Association and Interna-tional Medical Congress, and served as secretary of the Oil City board of examining surgeons for pensions. His interest in the welfare of the community in which he settled for his life work showed itself in sincere public spirit practically manifested in many ways, particularly by his zealous services as member of the school board for a number of years. Educational affairs always received the benefit of his influence, judiciously exercised along the most helpful lines of training, and his coworkers on the board as well as his fellow citizens appreciated his assistance greatly. Politically he was a Democrat, and a Mason in fraternal affiliation. Though busy with the demands of a large practice he always found time for matters of general concern, his unselfish attitude in every relation of life winning such esteem that on the day of his funeral business was suspended in Oil City-an expression of respect seldom accorded.
