He and his wife resided on the home place for three years after their marriage, then purchased and moved onto an adjoining farm. They finally settled on the Ailes homestead.
In addition to general farming, he conducted a gristmill for some years. In politics he was a stanch Democrat, and held various local offices. He was a member and ardent supporter of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
