He enlisted for service in the Spanish-American war in Company 13, 16th regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteer infantry, and served with distinction in Cuba. He re-enlisted for two years and served in the Philippines. He continued in the regular army and became an officer, and also saw service in World War I.
