General Notes: Husband - William McCormick

The first settler within the limits of the present borough of Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, was William McCormick, who came there from near Winchester, Virginia, about the year 1770. He had a number of pack-horses, and with them was engaged in the transportation of salt, iron, and other goods from Cumberland, Maryland, to the Youghiogheny and Monongahela Rivers.

He settled on the other side of the river, directly opposite the house of his father-in-law. His first residence there was a log house, which he built on the river-bank. It was still standing in 1882 on land owned by the Pittsburgh and Connellsville Railroad Company. In this cabin he lived many years, and then removed to a double cabin which he built on a site below the stone house on the Davidson farm. Afterwards he built a large log house where later was the stone house built by John Boyd, who purchased the McCormick property in 1831.

He had eleven children, four of whom removed to Adams County, Ohio, and two to Indiana.

He came to Southwestern Pennsylvania about 1770 and was the first settler within the limits of the present borough of Connellsville. He preceded Zachariah Connell by a few years, although the place was named in honor of the later settler. William M'Cormick brought with him from Winchester, Virginia, a number of pack horses. These he employed in the transportation of salt and iron and other commodities from Cumberland, Maryland, to the Youghiogheny and Monongahela River settlements. There were no railroads, and Cumberland was the nearest point on the old National Pike. He settled on the Connellsville side of the river, building his home of logs on the river bank, directly opposite the home of Colonel William Crawford, on the west side of the Youghiogheny River, in 1767, at Stewart's Crossing, later the borough of New Haven and later a part of the city of Connellsville. [PH, 21]

General Notes: Wife - Ophelia Crawford

She was a hardy young girl of seventeen, when the family crossed the mountains into the unbroken wilderness of the Youghiogheny Valley, Pennsylvania.
