General Notes: Husband - Samuel W. Crawford

He and his brothers John P., Ebenezer, William R., and Robert J., went to California in 1850, making the journey overland. All returned safely, pursued trades, became merchants and were large owners of oil and gas lands.

His education was such as the country schools afforded. He learned the carpenter's trade but never followed it for any length of time. In 1854 he went to California and engaged in mining for eight years, mainly in Calaveras, Merced, and Tuolumne counties. In 1862 he went to Idaho, and remained several years. In 1865 he returned to Emlenton, and for four years engaged with his brothers Eben and A. H., George Livingston, and D. D. Moriarty in the foundry business, then fell into line with the community and began oil producing. Politically he was a Republican, and like most of the Crawfords, was a member of the Presbyterian church. [HVC 1890, 939]
