General Notes: Husband - Thomas Wally

He attended the district schools in boyhood when opportunity offered and followed farming more or less all his life. He owned and occupied a farm of 150 acres in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, in 1886. For thirty years he was employed in the Pennsylvania oil fields as a carpenter and rig and tank builder, and was considered a very competent workman. Politically he was a Democrat and an influential one in Perry township, where his fellow citizens frequently elected him to public of-fices. He served as assessor, auditor, tax collector and school director.

He was, in early life, a farmer, but later was a con-tractor engaged in rig building in the oil fields, being one of the pioneers in this line of busi-ness. He was closely identified with the early history of the discovery and development of oil and gas wells in Pennsylvania, and actively engaged in contracting, and operating for oil and gas, from 1865, in the early days of Oil Creek, until 1900, when he retired.
He and his wife were consistent members of the Methodist Church from childhood, and he was an Odd Fellow and Granger.

He learned the carpenter's trade and followed contracting and building. He built boats for others and one for himself, which he used in the transportation of oil from Oil City to Pittsburgh for some time. When the oil excitement had somewhat subsided he sold his boat and followed the oil fields, contracting and rig building. In 1899 he returned to his farm, but loved to relate the early experiences of his life in the great oil fields. Politically he was a Democrat, and in church relations a Methodist. He served as assessor of his township of Perry, in Allegheny [sic] county, and in other local offices, including that of school director.
