General Notes: Husband - Thomas Hartley Crawford


He graduated at Princeton College in 1804. He afterward studied law and was admitted to the Franklin County Bar, Nov. 10, 1807. He practiced his profession at Chambersburg and rose to eminence at the Bar. He was a representative in Congress, 1829-33, and a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature, 1833-34. In 1836 he was appointed a commissioner to investigate alleged frauds in the purchase of the Reservation of the land of the Creek Indians. In 1838 he was appointed Commissioner of Indian affairs, a position that he held until the accession of President Polk in 1845, by whom he was appointed Judge of the Criminal Court of the District of Columbia. Judge Crawford retained this position until his death.
