General Notes: Husband - Vincent Loockerman Bradford Townsend

Robert T. Townsend was president and general manager of Townsend Company; John M. Townsend was vice-president; Vincent L. Bradford (Townsend), secretary and treasurer; Arthur C. Townsend, mill manager. The business thus conducted operated the first wire mill to be established west of the Allegheny Mountains. An old directory of the City of Pittsburgh (at that time a small town) refers to the Townsend Wire Mill as one "from whence the great valley of the middle West is supplied." Besides wire-rivets and wire-nails, various wire products were made, and the output grew to large proportions.

He attended the grammar schools and high school of his community, and on finishing his studies entered the employ of the Townsend Company. He was a faithful employee of this concern from the time he first became affiliated with it, and knew every detail of its business thoroughly. In fact, so capable was his work in the various departments in which he was employed that he rose to be secretary-treasurer of the concern. He gained that position as early as 1905.
Mr. Bradford served his country both in a political way and during the stress of war. He was an indefatigable worker in the ranks of the Republican Party, and during the First World War he was chairman of the New Brighton division of the American Red Cross, and vice-president of the Home Defense League. He also participated actively in the raising of funds to finance the troops abroad, and to otherwise aid in the winning of the struggle. He was prominent in Masonic circles, holding the thirty-second degree in the New Brighton Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons; was a member of the Valley of New Castle Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; and a life-member of the Syria Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He was also a member of the Fort McIntosh Social Club, the New Brighton Men's Business Association, a charter member of the New Brighton Country Club, and belonged to the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. His principal diversions were trap-shooting and golf. He was champion trapshooter of Western Pennsylvania in 1921, leading a field of one hundred and fifty contestants. Mr. Bradford and his family were attendants at the First Presbyterian Church.
