He owned and lived on the old family homestead in Cecil Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

He received his schooling in Cecil Township and after reaching man's estate devoted himself closely to agricultural pursuits. For many years he raised a large amount of stock and made a specialty of high grade sheep. He served at least two terms as justice of the peace. In politics he was always identified with the Republican party. He was a director in the Citizens' Trust Company of Canonsburg. With his family he belonged to the United Presbyterian Church at Venice.
