He was reared and educated in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and served an apprenticeship of four years at the jeweler's trade in Butler, with D. L. Cleeland. In 1880-82, he worked at his trade as a jour­neyman in Mercer. In March, 1883, he located in Beaver Falls where he was employed in a jewelry store one year, and in October, 1885, he embarked in business for himself in Beaver Falls, where he built up a large and lucrative business. He also had a first-class gents' furnishing store.
