He was born at Knightstown, Indiana, lived several years with his parents in Iowa and Kentucky, and moved to Ohio at age of twelve. In 1862, he received a Captain's commission and recruited Co. F., 91st O. V. I., and served with Gen. Cox, in the Kanawha campaign, with Gen. Crook, at Cloyd Mt.; Gen. Hunter at Lynchburg; and the Shenandoah campaign; Battles of Strasburg and Winchester. On his return from the army, in the autumn of 1864, he assumed charge of the Buena Vista Furnace, in Boyd County, Kentucky. He was a stockholder in several furnaces belonging to Culbertson, Means & Culbertson, being a member of the firm.
He was also one of the owners of the Cherokee Iron Works, in Alabama. He was elected to the Kentucky State Legislature in 1875, on the Republican ticket.
