General Notes: Husband - John Alcock

Chester Co, PA

With his brother Francis, he came to Newberry, York County, Pennsylvania, about 1778, in which year they were both taxable.

He was a diligent Bible student and possessed a number of valuable books at a time when books were rare in America. His references to Isaac Newton's works and his remarks upon early Methodism are interesting, while his chronological notations are curious and unique. In his will, dated Feb. 15, 1811, he bequeaths his books, including a family Bible, to his only son William Alcock.

John was first cousin to Richard, Jr., and Robert Elcock of York County, Pennsylvania, who was the York County ancestor of the Rev. Thomas Elcock of Van Wert, Ohio, and the Rev. Edward Payson Elcock of Gallion, Ohio. The name was variously spelled Alcock and Elcock by the first emigrants to Pennsylvania.
