He spent his early and mature years in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania.
He was married at the age of fifty-six or fifty-seven. He retired to his farm in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1798.

Was a tanner by trade.

He served in Revolution: July, 1778, private in Third Batt'n Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, Associators, Col. James Bell. Also 3rd Bat. 1781-2, Col. James Bell."
