He came to Ross township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1835, learned the blacksmith's trade with his brother William, and followed it thirty-four years. Subsequently he turned his attention to agriculture, owning a farm of 109 acres.

He was born on the old homestead in Baldwin township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. [MAC II, 361]
