He acquired his education in various schools and academies, including Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, where he graduated at the age of nineteen in the class of 1864. He also graduated in the law department of Harvard University, class of 1868. Having acquired a thorough literary and legal education, he was admitted to the bar at Meadville in October, 1868. He immediately entered upon the active practice of his profession at Erie, where he then resided. In 1873 he formed a law co-partnership with Col. C. B. Curtis, which continued until the latter's death in the spring of 1883.
