After completing his preliminary education, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, and in 1928 received the degree of Bachelor of Science at the Univer­sity of Alabama. He then became an engineer with the Pennsylvania State Highway Department, so continuing until 1936. In that year he went into the real estate busi­ness in Franklin. In that same year he was elected alderman from the Second Ward. He belonged to the Franklin Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, which he joined in his student days, and was active in the Protestant Episcopal Church, parish of St. John's.
