He was reared to farm labor and given a good common school education in the English branches, as taught in his day. At the age of twenty years, he entered the blacksmith's shop and there learned the blacksmiths' trade, which he, with a brother, carried on for some eight or ten years. The work of horse-shoeing and other heavy parts of the trade broke him down physically; hence, later, he engaged with a brother in the mercantile business at North Liberty. This continued three years, when he quit business and went west, where he remained for a year, then returned and engaged to work for a merchant at Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, and did so for another year. His next removal was to Grove City, in the spring of 1866, going there as a member of the firm of Craig, Dale & Co., general merchandise dealers, their place of business being on what is now North Broad Street. After five years of successful operation, the firm was changed to Dale & Maxwell, Mr. Craig selling his interest. For about twenty years this firm remained unchanged, but at the end of that time Mr. Dale purchased Mr. Maxwell's interest and conducted the store alone up to 1905 when the store building was burned. A new building, however, was soon erected and an employe, Mr. McCoy, took an interest in the firm, which was then styled T. W. Dale & Co. Mr. Dale became the oldest merchant of Grove City. In the autumn of 1907 his wife died and out of respect to her and to him, as the pioneer merchant of the place, all mercantile establishments of the city were closed on the day of her funeral.
Republican in politics, Mr. Dale was ever consistent and loyal to his party. In church faith he was a Presbyterian, connected with this church beginning in early manhood, he was been an elder for more than fifty years.
