General Notes: Husband - Franklin Spencer McCracken

He attended district school in Sandy Creek Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, until he was nineteen years of age and worked on the paternal estate until 1863. He then enlisted in the Fifty-fifth Pennsylvania Regiment, under Captain Stinson, completing first the ninety days' service designed to prevent the raid of Morgan's cavalry into Pennsylvania. The command was first sent to Pittsburgh and then to Parkersburg, West Virginia. At the expiration of this short service Mr. McCracken re-enlisted February 1, 1864, in Company B, Eighty-third Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, under command of Lieutenant-Colonel McCoy, and joined the regiment at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, in time to engage in the first battle of the Wilderness. At this battle Mr. McCracken was wounded, but was able to continue with his company and was with the regiment in all its battles. He was at Appomattox and witnessed the final surrender of Lee, and participated in the grand review at Washington. He was honorably discharged July 1, 1865. Upon his return home he engaged in farming in Sandy Creek Township for one year and in Crawford County for a like period, and then tried an agricultural experiment in the state of Tennessee. He was, however, soon back to Mercer County and purchased a farm just east of Sheakleyville, on which he remained for five years. While thus engaged he also bought an interest in the firm of Logan and D'Arment and engaged in the saw and planing mill business, which for six years was operated under the style of D'Arment and McCracken. Subsequently he sold his interest and purchased the old McCracken homestead, which his uncle, James McCracken, had inherited from his father. Mr. McCracken was one of the directors of the Bell Telephone Company. He was an old line Republican and an active member of Elijah Thompson Post, G. A. R., No. 417, of Sheakleyville, and served as commander of the post. He was influential in the work of the Presbyterian Church, of which he was for many years a deacon and an elder. He served several terms as a member of the school board and was township treasurer. [HMC 1909, 1061]
