General Notes: Husband - Col. Andrew Lewis McFarlane
He received a good common-school education, and began work for himself as a farmer in his native county. In 1844 he came to Westmoreland County to superintend improvements upon his brother's farm. He was successful in business, and added very largely to his patrimony. His possessions were chiefly land and coal. He also carried on an extensive lumber trade.
He was educated in the public and academic schools of what is now Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. He came to Westmoreland County in 1844 and began farming.
He was a successful business man. He owned two large farms, a considerable portion of a silver mine near Idaho Spring, Colorado, and a great deal of stock in banks, besides being a heavy stockholder in the Westmoreland Coal company and the Redstone Oil, Coal and Coke company, in Fayette County. Mr. McFarlane was familiarly called "Colonel," though he lay no claim to military honor.
He had six children with his first wife, two of whom were still living in 1882. With his second wife he had three children, two of whom were living in 1882.
