In his early life he learned the trade of a shoemaker, which he followed until his marriage. After marriage he moved to Hartstown, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in farming for about fourteen years, and in 1905 removed to Greenville, Mercer County, where he was employed as a car builder at the Bessemer shops. He was a United Presbyterian in religious faith and a Democrat in politics.
He was residing on the family homestead in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, in 1909, farming.
