attended the common schools, and spent two terms at Beaver College, Beaver, Penn. He was engineer at the Clay Furnace for eight years, and at Youngstown, Ohio, some time. He went to California in 1853, in company W. W. Williamson, Moses Blank, William and Harry Ash, making the trip from Saint Joe, Mo., by ox team. He returned in 1855,
