General Notes: Husband - Dr. Howard Woods Day

He spent his boyhood in his native town and was educated at the local public schools, at Washington & Jefferson College, and the University of Nebraska, which he later attended. He had, at a comparatively early age, decided upon the profession of medicine as a career, and after attending the last named institution, went to Chicago where he entered the Chicago Medical College. Here he left behind him an excellent record for character and scholarship and was graduated with the class of 1899, taking the degree of M. D. Returning at once to his native state, he gained the practical experience necessary to the practice of his calling as an interne at McKeesport Hospital, McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where he remained for one year. In the year 1900 he came to the town of Monessen, one of the most rapidly growing communities in western Pennsylvania and there established himself in practice. He was successful from the outset and built up one of the most desirable clienteles and one of the largest practices in the entire region. In addition to his private work in both the medical and surgical branches of his profession, Dr. Day held the position of surgeon for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Company, for the Carnegie Steel Company and the Page Steel and Wire Company.
Dr. Day, besides the professional activities in which he was engaged, took an active part in many branches of the community's life and was affiliated with many important organizations there. He was a member of the Tri County Medical Society, the Westmoreland County Medical Society, as well as the Pennsylvania State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. He was also a member of the Monessen Board of Trade, serving one term as vice-president, and was a prominent Mason, being affiliated with Monessen Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, Monessen Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, McKean Commandery, Knights Templar, and Syria Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.
Politically Dr. Day was a Progressive Republican, while in his religious belief he was a member of the Presbyterian church. Following the declaration of a state of war between the United States and Germany, by President Wilson, Dr. Day tendered his services to the Medical Officers' Reserve, but was not accepted by reason of a slight physical defect, but was made a member of the Local Board for Division No. 8, of Westmoreland County, which he served as chairman and physician.
